Do I Need A Trash Compactor?

When planning to remodel your kitchen, if you are asking, “Do I need a trash compactor?” You probably need a trash compactor, especially if you have a household that generates a lot of trash. Its especially important for households that accumulate bags of trash that must be stored before it is picked up by the local garbage pickup service. If you notice a smell from your accumulated garbage and want to improve the odor in your garbage area, a compactor may be the answer to your problem.

Families or households that generate a lot of trash could benefit from a trash compactor because it reduces the volume of the trash by 75% or more. If you normally have five large bags of garbage sitting out in cans waiting to be picked up on the curb each week, reducing the number to one can would also reduce the amount of trash that had to be taken to the curb and the amount of trash that had to be picked up by the garbage truck. If you pay for garbage pickup, it would save money for them to pick up one bag versus five bags.

If unpleasant odors often drift from your garbage area and offend your senses, you should seriously consider a trash compactor. The compactor shields the surrounding area from odors of decomposing food trash. The compactor is sealed and protected from the intrusion of vermin. Having a compactor inside your home is more sanitary than having large quantities of trash outside your home drawing the attention of vermin which have easy access to the unguarded trash outside.

As your family discards trash it is compacted. The compactor will compact the equivalent of 6 times one13 gallon trash bag. The resultant 13 gallon trash bag allows your family to cart trash to the curb less frequently and to amass significantly less trash in apparent volume. Compactors offer full extension doors to easily load trash. They have automatic shut off features when the door is open. Deodorizers are incorporated into the design and easily refreshed.

A trash compactor reduces the volume of trash a household produces by 75% or more, reducing the number of trash bags generated by a household. The compactor cuts back on the amount of odors that escape from accumulated trash. Since the trash is not outside drawing the attention of critters, vermin is one less issue for the homeowner to address. The cost of garbage pickup will be less because instead of having several garbage cans to empty, your household will have one or two. All these benefits will be the result of your buying a garbage compactor.

How To Replace Your Garbage Disposal

If you need to replace your garbage disposal you normally have had a problem with the old one. Normally, homeowners do not pay enough attention to their garbage disposals until it is too late. Then there is the unmistakable sound of the garbage disposal breaking which always means a long weekend. However, if you have a few tips you can make the job go quickly and as painlessly as any home improvement project.

Safety first, always turn off the switch and then turn off the breaker. After you flip the breaker turn the switch back on and make sure you have the right breaker. If you skip this step and stick your hand down and your breaker was mislabeled you will never forget this mistake, so always double cheek this step. Once you have the power off a garbage disposal is actually easy to remove. Take everything out from underneath your sink and make it easier on yourself to get underneath the sink. Unplug the garbage disposal or disconnect the wires.

Next, remove the discharge tube which is a PVC pipe attached to your disposal by two screws. Once you remove the screws you should be able to push the pipe out of the way. You will then need to remove the dishwasher waste tube; this is normally a plastic flex tube that runs from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal. You can remove this pipe by loosening the metal fitting over the discharge spout with a screwdriver.

Now that you have the tubes removed you need to remove the assembly unit from the sink. You can remove this unit by unscrewing the entire garbage disposal in a counter clockwise motion. Once the disposal is loose you can remove the three mounting screws that actually hold the disposal in place. Remove the snap ring that holds the assembly unit in place with a screwdriver. Once all of these parts are used the mounting ring, back up ring and gasket will separate. You can then simply push the sink flange up and the garbage disposal will drop down.

You can install a new garbage disposal by first attaching the new mounting unit and placing the new disposal on this unit. Then screw the unit into the mounting bracket by turning clockwise. Turn until the tabs on the unit match up with the tabs on the mounting ring and use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Replace both the discharge tube and the dishwasher hose and tighten both with provided screws. Now that you have all the plumbing done, reattach the electrical and you have completed your weekend project.
